FERMA intensifies maintenance of federal roads in Bauchi
The Federal Government, through the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), has commenced maintenance and repair works on 32 kilometres of roads in Bauchi State ahead of the rainy season. According to FERMA’s Bauchi Field Engineer, Nanpan Joroh, the projects-funded under the 2024 budget-focus on ensuring the safety of road users, especially during festive periods and the rainy season. Three contractors are currently working on various sites, with the main Bauchi-Jos road nearing 100% completion, covering 20 kilometres to the Plateau State border and now free of potholes.
Additional works are ongoing along the Bauchi-Gombe road, particularly a five-kilometre stretch near Alkaleri town, where significant pothole patching and repairs are underway, currently at 50% completion. Efforts are also being made to address washout-prone areas by constructing retaining walls and concrete protections to prevent road collapse during heavy rains. Joroh expressed optimism that all projects would be completed within a month and appealed for further support to address other critical washout locations before the next rainy season begins
