Emergency Reconstruction of Collapsed 3-Cell Pipe Culvert & Reinstatement of Embankment Washout
The vast network of federal roads nationwide has evolved over the years encountering its fair share of challenges especially that road maintenance was non-existent in Nigeria not until 2003 with the establishment of FERMA.
Several federal roads have borne the weight of all vehicular movements from one end of the country to another leading to either their impassable, deplorable or collapsed condition. Undoubtedly, the Agency has not relented in catering and countering these outcomes of such interactions on federal roads. FERMA field engineers are constantly seeking means and applying measures to keep the nation’s federal roads motor-able all year round in accordance with the Agency’s mandate. A typical case is that of the Kaduna FERMA field office headed by the Federal Roads Maintenance Engineer, Engr. Atiku Abubakar.
Following a heavy downpour sometime ago, a 3-cell ring (pipe) culvert along Western by-pass, Kaduna state, suddenly collapsed and caused a blockage of the outlet (downstream. This led to the flooding of an entire community at the upstream which threatened to cut-off the entire road.
To salvage the situation and prevent further catastrophic occurrences, an emergency re-instatement of the affected chainage – CH.0+525 was embarked on after a prompt palliative work was carried out initially. Scope of work for the emergency re-instatement was on site clearance, provision of hardcore, construction of RC retaining wall, replacement of collapsed pipe culverts, filling with laterite and embankment protection.
Work on Western by-pass ch.0+525 Kaduna state was 99% completed.
